TEFA for Students with an IEP (up to $30,000)

A TEFA student with an IEP on file who attends a participating private school can receive up to $30,000, based on the home district and the IEP's instructional setting code.

Texas does not use a single disability amount. The add-on equals what the student's district of residence would have received for the instructional arrangement on the child's IEP, and it is added to the $10,474 base. Most students receive less than the $30,000 cap.

For a Houston ISD student, the 2026-27 add-on is $6,344 for a mainstream setting (code 40, total $16,818), $5,257 for resource or self-contained settings (codes 41-45, total $15,731), and $15,171 for residential-facility codes 81-89 (total $25,645). Speech-only services (code 00) add $919. See every Houston-area district on our IEP funding table.

Year one gave top priority to children with a disability in households at or below 500% of the federal poverty level. About 20,700 Tier 1 students were funded statewide by July 29, 2026.

Students without a current IEP receive the standard $10,474. A private diagnosis alone does not raise the amount; it is the IEP code that matters.
